HeatShield Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Crown Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

HeatShield crown repair in Cambridge typically runs $340-$680 installed, depending on how far the cracking has spread and whether the flue tiles need reseating at the same time. We stock HeatShield-compatible crown resurfacing materials on our trucks and can usually complete the job in a single visit once we’ve done a camera inspection to confirm the damage underneath. Most Cambridge homeowners discover the problem during their pre-burning-season sweep, or after spotting sand-like debris in the firebox that turns out to be disintegrated crown mortar.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield manufactures two distinct crown repair systems, and matching the right one matters for warranty coverage and cure time. The Cerfractory Foam system is the poured resurfacing compound used when the crown’s structural concrete is intact but the surface is cracked or spalled. The CrownSeal system is the flexible coating applied over sound concrete or over a fresh Cerfractory repair as a weatherproof top layer. We carry both in our standard inventory.

To identify which your chimney needs, look for the original application tag, usually found on the flue tile or inside the cleanout door. The Cerfractory batch number starts with CF- and includes a manufacture date; CrownSeal carries a CS- prefix and a color code (gray for standard, white for tintable). If the tag is missing, which is common on Cambridge homes where the crown has been recoated multiple times, we measure the crown slope and thickness. Cerfractory requires a minimum 1.5-inch thickness at the center to bond properly. CrownSeal can go thinner, but only over sound substrate, never over active cracks wider than 1/8 inch.

We use OEM HeatShield materials exclusively for crown work, not aftermarket equivalents. The Cerfractory formula is proprietary, and third-party refractory cements marketed as “compatible” have failed prematurely in our experience, particularly where Cambridge’s freeze-thaw cycles are concerned. HeatShield’s own 20-year material warranty is only valid when both the base coat and top coat are from their system.

Signs Your HeatShield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Fresh cracking in a previously repaired crown. HeatShield Cerfractory expands and contracts with the flue, but if the original concrete substrate has continued to deteriorate underneath, stress cracks will telegraph through within 2-4 years. In Cambridge, we see this most often on flat or negatively sloped crowns where water ponds before freezing.
  • Sandy grit or small pebbles in the firebox. This is degraded crown material washing down the flue during rain. If the grit is white or gray and crumbles to powder between your fingers, it’s likely the Cerfractory surface breaking down. Darker, heavier pieces suggest the original concrete is failing beneath it.
  • Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney breast. A compromised crown lets water track down the flue liner or between the liner and surrounding brick. On the older homes along Brattle Street and throughout Harvard Square, we’ve traced ceiling stains to crown failures that looked minor from the roof but had opened channels straight to the attic framing.
  • CrownSeal coating that has bubbled, peeled, or turned chalky. The flexible membrane degrades with UV exposure, typically 8-12 years in New England’s sun. Once the surface turns powdery, the waterproofing is gone and water is reaching the Cerfractory or concrete beneath. Catching this early avoids a full teardown.
  • Efflorescence blooming on the chimney brick below the crown. White mineral deposits mean water is moving through the masonry, and the crown is the most likely entry point. On Cambridge’s clay-rich soils, this often pairs with spalling brick faces once the freeze-thaw cycling begins in November.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
HeatShield Cerfractory crown resurfacing (single flue) $340-$520
Cerfractory plus CrownSeal top coat $480-$680
Flue tile reseating (if needed) $120-$180 additional
Level-2 camera inspection with photo report Included

The spread in pricing reflects crown size, accessibility, and how much prep the underlying concrete requires. A straightforward recoat on a walkable roof in Porter Square is at the lower end. A crown on a three-story Victorian in Mid-Cambridge with slate roofing that requires ladder staging runs higher. We price every job upfront after inspection, not after we’ve started. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice.

Our HeatShield crown work carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails in that window, we come back. No paperwork to dig up, no argument about whether it was “installation” or “materials.” We also register the HeatShield material warranty with the manufacturer on your behalf, which extends coverage to 20 years.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no safe DIY path for crown repair. The work happens at height, on a surface that is already structurally compromised, and involves materials that cure with precise temperature and moisture controls. HeatShield Cerfractory must be mixed to exact slump, poured to minimum thickness, and kept damp during cure. CrownSeal requires a clean, dry surface and specific ambient temperature at application. We’ve been called to correct homeowner-applied repairs where the Cerfractory dried too fast and shelled off in sheets, or where CrownSeal was applied over damp concrete and trapped moisture that destroyed the substrate within a season.

What you can safely do: from the ground, binoculars will show obvious cracking or coating failure. From inside, check the firebox after rain for fresh debris. Note any new water stains on ceilings or walls near the chimney. Then call us with what you’ve observed. We’ll confirm with a camera inspection and give you a plain-English verdict on whether the crown needs attention now or can wait until your next scheduled sweep. If it needs doing, we will tell you. If it does not, we will tell you that too. Call (857) 392-4709.
