Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

Gelco chimney cap installation in Cambridge typically runs $340-$680 for most single-flue and multi-flue models, including removal of the failed cap, flue measurement, and proper mounting with corrosion-resistant fasteners rated for New England’s freeze-thaw cycle. We stock common Gelco sizes on our trucks and can complete most replacements in a single visit. Homeowners usually discover the problem after a windstorm sends the cap clattering into the yard, or when water stains appear on the firebox ceiling that weren’t there last burning season.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps fall into several product families, and matching the right series matters more than many homeowners realize. The Gelco Multi-Flue cap with its 5/8-inch mesh screen and 24-gauge galvanized or stainless body is the workhorse we see on Cambridge’s pre-war colonials and 1970s raised ranches alike. Single-flue models mount with leg brackets or directly to the flue tile, while outside-mount designs require precise crown dimensions. The model number is stamped on the underside of the mesh skirt on caps manufactured after 2012; older units may carry only a date code.

We carry both OEM Gelco replacements and quality aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that match the 5/8-inch mesh spec required by Massachusetts fire code. The aftermarket route saves roughly $80-$120 on parts without sacrificing wind load rating or spark arrestor performance. One compatibility gotcha: Gelco’s 1980s and early 1990s caps used a narrower 1/2-inch mesh that no longer meets current code for open-burning fireplaces. If your cap predates 1996, plan on upgrading the mesh spec as part of the swap.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • The cap is visibly tilted or has shifted from center. This usually means the leg brackets have corroded at the attachment points or the masonry screws have backed out from freeze-thaw expansion. A tilted cap channels rainwater directly into the flue instead of shedding it.
  • Rust streaks run down the chimney face from the cap edge. Gelco’s galvanized models begin showing surface oxidation after 12-15 years in Cambridge’s salted-air environment. Once the protective coating fails, the underlying steel deteriorates faster than most owners expect.
  • Mesh screen is separating from the frame or has visible gaps. The spot-welded joints on older Gelco caps fatigue from thermal cycling. Gaps larger than a quarter-inch let embers escape and allow squirrels and starlings to enter, which we see regularly in the wooded lots near Fresh Pond.
  • Water pooling in the firebox after heavy rain. A cap that looks intact from the ground may have a cracked or separated crown flange, or the storm collar may have lost its seal. The water path is often invisible until the cap comes off for inspection.
  • Whistling or draft noise that changes with wind direction. This indicates the cap has lifted enough to create a pressure differential, or the baffle has detached internally. Both conditions reverse the intended draft and can push smoke into living spaces.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Cambridge properties, our installed pricing breaks down as follows:

  • Single-flue Gelco cap, standard galvanized: $340-$420
  • Single-flue Gelco cap, 304 stainless steel: $480-$580
  • Multi-flue Gelco cap, galvanized: $520-$620
  • Multi-flue Gelco cap, stainless steel: $640-$780
  • Crown repair or flange resealing (when needed): $180-$340 additional

The range reflects flue height, roof pitch, and whether the existing fasteners are seized or have pulled out masonry with them. Every quote includes removal and disposal of the old cap, new stainless fasteners, a bead of high-temp silicone at the crown interface, and our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. We photograph the before condition and the completed mount so you see the work without climbing the ladder yourself. No surprises on the bill.

DIY or Call Us?

There is honest work a homeowner can do from the ground. Verify the cap size with a tape measure from the driveway. Check the model stamp with binoculars. Confirm whether water in the firebox correlates with rain, which tells you the cap is the likely culprit, not the crown or flashing.

What we do not recommend: climbing a pitched roof with a fourteen-pound cap and a cordless drill. The fall risk is real, and an improperly mounted cap tears off in the next nor’easter, taking masonry with it. Gelco’s installation torque spec for leg brackets is 25 inch-pounds, tight enough to hold, loose enough to avoid cracking flue tile. Most homeowners guess wrong in both directions. If it needs doing, we will tell you. If it does not, we will tell you that too. Call (857) 392-4709 and we will walk through what you are seeing.
