Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Famco Chimney Cap & Crown in Cambridge: What to Know First

We provide independent Famco chimney cap and crown service across Cambridge, from the triple-deckers in Inman Square to the older brick stacks along Brattle Street. Most Famco cap replacements and crown repairs are completed in a single visit, with upfront pricing agreed before we start. We’re not the cheapest outfit in town, and we don’t pretend to be - we charge a fair rate for work that holds up through Cambridge’s freeze-thaw cycles, and we put that promise in writing.

Call (857) 392-4709

This page is for homeowners who already have a Famco product on their chimney and need to know whether it can be repaired, what it will cost, and who in Cambridge actually understands these parts. If that’s you, call us at (857) 392-4709. A live person answers, 24 hours a day.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Stainless single-flue caps (SC series) - fastener fatigue. The 304-grade stainless holds up well, but the attachment hardware is often galvanized steel that corrodes where Cambridge’s road salt meets chimney moisture. We’ve replaced SC-series caps on Mass. Ave. properties where the cap itself was sound but had blown off in a February wind because the fasteners had turned to rust dust. We upgrade to 316 stainless hardware on every reinstall.
  • Multi-flue caps (Gelco-adapter or Famco-branded multi-flue) - mesh collapse from creosote weight. Famco’s 5/8-inch mesh is standard, but in Cambridge’s older homes with offset flues and poor draft, heavy glazed creosote accumulates on the mesh over seasons. The mesh sags, blocks airflow, and can back-draft CO into the house. We pull the cap, document the mesh condition with camera photos, and either clean and reset or replace with heavier 3/4-inch mesh if the flue calls for it.
  • Copper caps - solder joint failure at the crown interface. Famco’s copper line is beautiful on a Cambridge Victorian, but the soldered seam where the skirt meets the flue collar cracks after 8-12 years of thermal cycling. We’ve found this on Huron Avenue homes where the cap looked perfect from the ground but was funneling water straight onto the crown. We resolder with lead-free silver bearing alloy, or replace the skirt section if the crown beneath has already spalled.
  • Crown wash over Famco flue extenders - the hidden gap. When a Famco flue extender is installed through a crown wash, the interface is often packed with cheap caulk that shrinks. Water gets behind, freezes, and pops the extender loose. We see this on 1980s and 90s Cambridge rebuilds in particular. Our fix: remove the extender, grind back to sound concrete, reseat with a proper crown sealant, and reinstall with a stainless storm collar.
  • Galvanized economy caps - bottom-up rust in coastal Cambridge air. The less expensive Famco galvanized caps sold through some big-box channels look fine for three or four years, then the underside starts bubbling where condensation sits. By the time a homeowner notices staining on the brick below, the cap is perforating. We don’t reinstall galvanized on Cambridge chimneys - the salt air from the Charles and the urban sulfur load make it a false economy. We quote stainless or copper replacement, and we explain why.

Our Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Process

  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, day or night. We ask the model name if you know it, the age of the cap or crown, and what you’re seeing - water, rust staining, a cap that’s shifted or missing. We book a window that works for you.
  2. 2
Level-2 camera inspection on arrival. Our technician photographs the cap or crown from the roof, the flue interior below, and the firebox looking up. You see the photos on a tablet before we discuss options. No photos, no recommendation - that’s our rule.
  3. 3
Parts decision: OEM Famco, compatible aftermarket, or custom. If your cap is a current Famco model and the flue size is standard, we often have the OEM on the truck. For discontinued lines or odd flue dimensions, we fabricate from Copperfield or Olympia Chimney components that match or exceed Famco specs. We explain the trade-off and the price difference before you decide.
  4. 4
The repair or replacement. Crown repairs get a bonded resurfacing with proper slope and drip edge. Cap installs get 316 stainless fasteners, a bead of high-temp sealant at the flue interface, and a torque check. We don’t leave until the cap passes a pull test.
  5. 5
Final camera verification and documentation. We run the camera again to confirm clear flue passage, no debris dropped, proper draft. You get the photos, a plain-English report, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing.
  6. 6
Cleanup and walkthrough. We haul the old cap or crown debris. You sign once, and the price matches the estimate. If it needs doing, we will tell you. If it does not, we will tell you that too.

What Famco Chimney Cap & Crown Costs in Cambridge

These are real ranges for Famco-specific work we’ve done in Cambridge over the past two seasons. Your exact price depends on roof access, flue count, and what the inspection reveals.

Service Typical Range
Famco single-flue cap replacement (stainless) $340 - $520
Famco multi-flue cap replacement $580 - $890
Crown repair / resurfacing (under 30 sq ft) $680 - $1,150
Crown rebuild with pour (extensive spalling) $1,400 - $2,200
Flue extender reseat with crown seal $280 - $450
Copper cap solder repair $220 - $380

What moves the price: steep roof pitch requiring rigging, multiple flues with conflicting sizes, hidden crown damage beneath a failed cap, and the need for custom fabrication when Famco has discontinued your line. We price these upfront, not as surprises midway. Call (857) 392-4709 for a free estimate - we bring the camera, not a sales pitch.

Why Cambridge Homeowners Call Hearthstone Chimney Co. for Famco Work

We’ve been on Cambridge roofs since 1984. Russell Haines learned this trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent decades since understanding how New England weather treats metal and masonry differently than Southern California sun. Our crew knows Famco’s product evolution - which series used which gauge, where the weak points are, and when an aftermarket part from Gelco or Olympia Chimney is the smarter play.

Every job carries the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if it’s not right, we make it right, no paperwork and no arguing. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and equipped to finish most Famco cap and crown jobs in one visit. And when you call (857) 392-4709, a live person answers - not tomorrow morning, not after you press 3.
