Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco produces several cap series that circulate through Cambridge’s older housing stock, and matching the right one matters more than most homeowners expect. The stamped model number lives on a small tag welded to the skirt or stamped into the mesh screen frame; if corrosion has eaten it away, we measure the flue opening and the overall cap height to identify the series.

The Galvanized Standard and Stainless Multi-Flue series are what we encounter most often in neighborhoods like Porter Square and North Cambridge, where 1920s colonials and triple-deckers share the same basic flue dimensions but very different exposure to salt air and freeze-thaw cycles. The Multi-Flue units require exact center-to-center flue spacing; a half-inch error means the cap sits on one flue and gaps on the other, which we have seen accelerate deterioration of both flues.

• Water staining on the firebox floor or smoke shelf. The cap’s mesh screen has separated from the skirt, or the lid has shifted off-center. Rain enters directly, and in Cambridge’s freeze-thaw cycle, that water expands inside the flue and spalls the flue tile surface.
• Rust streaks running down the chimney brick or siding. Galvanized caps lose their zinc coating after roughly 8-12 years of New England exposure. Once the base metal is exposed, rust accelerates; the streaks are iron oxide washing down with every rain, and they stain porous brick permanently if ignored.
• The cap is visibly tilted, lifted, or missing entirely after wind or ice. Famco caps use either a screw-tight mount or a slip-in skirt with tension legs. Ice buildup in the mesh can add twenty pounds or more; if the mounting hardware was undersized or corroded, the whole assembly lifts or launches.
• Birds, squirrels, or debris entering the flue. Mesh screening on Famco caps is 5/8-inch weave, which blocks adult squirrels but not juveniles if the mesh has sagged. We found a pine cone cache three feet down a Brattle Street flue last October; the cap mesh had corroded through at the weld points.
• Draft problems or smoke backup on startup. The cap lid has collapsed downward, or the mesh is clogged with creosote and debris. A blocked cap restricts airflow exactly when the fire needs it most, and the pressure can push smoke into living spaces.
