Copperfield Damper Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Damper Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible damper repair assemblies throughout Cambridge, with most completed in a single visit for $280-$520 installed, depending on whether the throat plate, frame, or both need replacement. Our trucks carry the common Copperfield 8-inch through 13-inch throat sizes, and we match to your exact model before leaving the shop. Most Cambridge homeowners discover the problem on the first cold snap in October or November, when they open the damper and it sticks, drops, or refuses to seal.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield has manufactured dampers under several series names over the decades, and the part you need depends on when your fireplace was built or retrofitted. The most common in Cambridge’s pre-war housing stock are the Copperfield Standard Throat Dampers (marked with a stamped “C” on the handle bracket) and the later EZ-Adjust series with the slotted control arm. We also see the Contractor Series in 1980s and 1990s rebuilds around North Cambridge and the Wellington-Harrington area.

To identify yours, look for the stamped model number on the steel frame, usually visible from the firebox with a flashlight. If rust has eaten the stamp, measure the throat opening width and depth, and note whether the control is a pivot handle, a slider rod, or a chain pull. The EZ-Adjust arms measure 5/16-inch diameter; older Standard series use a slightly thicker 3/8-inch rod that is not interchangeable.

We are an independent service provider with no affiliation to Copperfield. For most repairs, we use OEM Copperfield replacement parts. In cases where the original series is discontinued, we source quality aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney and Famco that meet the same ASTM A36 steel spec and carry the same 10-year corrosion warranty. We will not substitute without telling you first.

Signs Your Copperfield Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The handle moves but the plate does not. The linkage pin has corroded or the cotter pin has sheared off. This is the most common failure we see in Cambridge’s older homes, where decades of humid summers and freeze-thaw cycles rust the connecting hardware while the plate itself is still sound.
  • The plate falls open or closed on its own. The tension spring has lost its arch or the spring anchor has cracked. Copperfield springs are high-tension components; a failed spring means the damper cannot hold position, and the sudden drop can damage the firebrick below.
  • You feel a draft even when the damper is “closed.” The frame has warped or the plate edge has eroded from creosote exposure. In Cambridge’s Victorian-era chimneys with oversized flues, even a 1/4-inch gap will pull heated air out of the house continuously.
  • The handle is seized or requires tools to move. The pivot bushings have galled, or the frame has rusted to the plate at the hinge point. Forcing it risks snapping the cast handle or distorting the frame, which turns a repair into a full replacement.
  • You see rust flakes or water staining below the damper. The frame is failing from the top down, usually from a leaking flue or missing crown allowing water to pool on the plate. This accelerates rapidly once it starts, and the frame can drop pieces into the firebox.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Typical Range What’s Included
Handle/linkage replacement only $280-$340 OEM or equivalent hardware, adjustment, seal test
Throat plate replacement (frame sound) $340-$420 Matched plate, new pivot hardware, tension calibration
Full damper assembly replacement $420-$520 Frame, plate, handle, spring, installation, documentation

What drives the range: accessibility (some Cambridge fireboxes are shallow or have unusual lintel depths), whether the existing frame bolts can be extracted or must be drilled out, and if the smoke shelf needs clearing to seat the new assembly properly. We quote the full price before starting, and that is the price on the invoice. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers all damper work in writing; if it does not seal or operate smoothly, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one safe check a homeowner can make: with the firebox cold and empty, shine a flashlight up and confirm whether the plate moves when the handle operates. If it does not, note whether the handle feels loose (linkage problem) or rigid (seized pivot). That information helps us bring the right parts.

Everything past observation is where DIY goes wrong. The spring in a Copperfield damper is under significant tension; releasing it without proper containment can launch hardware into the firebox or toward your face. The frame bolts are often seized in decades-old mortar, and drilling them out without damaging the smoke shelf takes experience. We have also found homeowners who installed a plate backwards, creating a gap that vented carbon monoxide into the living space during the first fire.

Our technicians carry the full range of Copperfield-compatible sizes, and most Cambridge damper repairs are completed in under two hours. Call (857) 392-4709 and we will walk through what you are seeing.
