DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Cambridge Owner’s Guide

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns and chase tops are not one-size-fits-all. The part you need depends on whether your system is DuraFlex SW (smooth wall), DuraFlex FW (flexible wall), or the older DuraFlex HT series discontinued around 2012. SW and FW systems use different collar diameters, and the HT collar pitch does not interchange with current production.

Check the data plate on your chase top, usually found on the underside of the lid or stamped into the vertical collar. You’ll need the nominal flue diameter, typically 6, 7, or 8 inches, plus the collar height. DuraFlex OEM crowns are galvanized steel with a baked enamel finish; we also carry aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney that match the spec and carry the same 10-year warranty. The aftermarket collars are slightly thicker gauge, which matters in Cambridge because the freeze-thaw cycle here will test thin metal. Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water dripping down the flue during rain. The crown seal has cracked or the chase top collar has pulled away from the flue. On DuraFlex systems, the silicone sealant at this joint is the first line of defense and it hardens to plastic after seven to ten Massachusetts winters.
• Rust staining on the exterior chase siding. The galvanized crown has corroded through at a seam or fastener hole. Cambridge’s salted-road aerosol accelerates this, especially within a quarter mile of Mass Ave or Memorial Drive where winter traffic is heaviest.
• The chase lid has dropped or sits crooked. The internal support frame has rotted or the fastening tabs have fatigued. DuraFlex chase tops rely on a square frame; once it goes out of true, the lid no longer sheds water to all four sides.
• Visible cracks in the concrete crown below a metal chase top. This is the underlying masonry crown, not the DuraFlex part itself, but it must be sound or the new chase top will leak within two seasons. We check this with a camera before quoting any crown work.
• Birds or squirrels entering the chase. The crown has shifted enough to open a gap at the flue collar, or the screen has detached. DuraFlex factory screens are stainless mesh; if yours is missing, the crown has likely been disturbed by wind or impact.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here. You can check the data plate, measure your flue diameter, and look for obvious rust or cracks from the ground with binoculars. What you should not do is climb a wet roof in November to torque fasteners on a chase top that may not support your weight.

The real risk is not the fall, though that is real enough. It is installing the wrong collar height or using hardware-store silicone on a 400-degree flue and having to do the job twice, with water damage in between. DuraFlex systems require high-temp RTV sealant rated to 500 degrees minimum, and the collar must be cut to leave a 1/4-inch expansion gap.
